Fall and The Bird {More Poems by Madalyn!}

September 22, 2021      Amy Cady

My daughter recently wrote a couple of poems for one of her Language Arts assignments. We both love Fall and she is definitely in the Fall Spirit, ready to enjoy another Fall season! On this, the official first day of the season, I thought I’d share her sweet poems for others to enjoy as well. (With her permission of course 🙂 )

Fall
By Madalyn Cady (September 2021 – age 10)

The Leaves are falling on the ground
That which was green now is brown
The rain is falling pleasantly
Delightful for the eyes to see

Halloween is quickly coming
Thanksgiving will soon be here
Christmas is not far away
But everyone is full of cheer.

The Bird
By Madalyn Cady (September 2021 – age 10)

There is a bird in a tree!
Mother, Father, come and see!
Look! There are eggs in her nest!
Oh! I wish her all the best.

Me and My Mistakes

September 6, 2021      Amy Cady

I’m sure I’m the only one out there that makes what feels like a million mistakes each day… But if you happen to fall in this category too, Welcome. 🙂

I’m a mom who makes mistakes –
I broke the stove, I crumble cakes.
I trip down stairs,
Don’t comb hair.
Forget the treats,
Leave books on seats.
And they all remember crystal clear
The night I woke up shook with fear.
I leave laundry on the floor in places
And my kids often have dirty faces.
I often spend too much time
Writing one more silly rhyme.
If given half a chance
I’d rather read then twirl and dance.
I don’t always have friends come play,
But at the end of every day
My heart is full for each one I serve,
They are more than I deserve,
For what a blessing is each one –
My husband, daughter, and each son.
Despite all the wrongs I make
They always love me and my mistakes.

Not Today’s Fool

September 4, 2021      Amy Cady

Life seems to go by way too fast! It’s easy to get caught up in the things that don’t matter but when you get a chance, be sure and embrace the things that do. 🙂

I would be a fool today
If I didn’t stop and say
“I love you!” to the ones I love
And send a Prayer of Thanks above
Each time I feel their tender touch
And realize just how much
I’m so glad they’re here with me
In this crazy family.
Oh, how fast the years go past,
And we’re left wishing they would last.
So while I have a chance today
“I love you!” is what I’ll say.

Choices

August 14, 2021      Amy Cady

I don’t know about you but I feel bombarded with choices most days. Should I have waffles or pancakes? Hair down or ponytail? Reach out to a friend or start laundry? Dishes or play a game with my kids? Chocolate or chocolate??? Sometimes it is a little overwhelming! What if I make the wrong choice?? What will I do? But really when we stop and think about it, some choices are the best choices overall and when we are making those, everything else falls into place. 🙂

Did you have a need today
To pray for help in any way?
Did you have a chance to share
The gospel message anywhere?
Did you notice blessings more
Than you did the day before?
Did you have a chance to be
Kinder then you meant to be?
Did you stop and look for good
Within the people in your neighborhood?
Were you more just like a child –
Humble, meek, and always mild?
Did you take the chance to read
Your scriptures more than just in deed?
Did you stop and listen to
The spirit as it spoke to you?
Did you humbly bow your head
And heed the words the Prophet said?

Or did you hold your head up high
And shake your fist up at the sky?
Harden your heart a little more
Than it was the day before?
Make the choice to get real mad,
Ignoring those who were real sad?
Take from those who were in need,
Let your heart consume with greed?
Mock the words that came from God,
Trample them like feet on sod?
Let your heart hold onto fast
All the things that will not last?
Take your trust from God to Man
Who changes like the shifting sand?
In this life we have a choice –
To listen to the still small voice
Or try to make it on our own
But maybe end up all alone.

We have the chance to choices make,
So which path will you choose to take?

The Life of a Bishop’s Wife

August 7, 2021      Amy Cady

My husband is currently serving as the Bishop in our ward. Some Sundays it’s hard to tell who is more tired at the end of the day – him or me! I always knew that the calling of Bishop was a hard, busy calling (and I think he’s doing a great job!!) but once I became a Bishop’s Wife, I gained a whole new appreciation for all the Bishop’s wives out there! Especially the ones with younger kids at home, like in our family. This is definitely not the easiest phase of life I’ve ever been in, and we may not be seeing all the blessings now, but I know Heavenly Father is aware of our sacrifices and the blessings will come.

While at church I sat and smiled
And watched my husband for a while
He took your tithing, shook your hands
Quietly listened to your plans
And then at 10, with humble heart
He took his seat so we could start
Then after prayers and three talks too
He once again shook hands with you
He chatted with the youth some more
Then walked with them there out the door
At 11:05 he started to teach
Listened kindly and didn’t preach
12 o’clock was time for home
But with our four I drove home alone.
For he must stay and meet with some –
We won’t see him until he’s done.
I’ve spent the day with our Four,
I got them ready and out the door:
Waited for shoes to all be found,
I’ve chased our toddler all around.
Calmed our deacon from his fright
Of passing the sacrament just right.
Combed the wild, tangled curls
Of our only baby girl
Rocked the baby as he slept.
And listened to your talk and wept
Grateful for the Savior more
Then I’ve ever been before.
Once my husband gets home too
We’ll read and study something new
Come Follow Me time for the week,
More like Christ is what we seek.
And with our toddler on his lap
My husband tries now not to nap.
Later after we all eat,
But before it’s time to sleep,
We snuggle up and watch a show.
Then it’s prayers and bed we go.
It’s goodnight to my Favorite Five –
I feel the luckiest alive.
Life’s not easy, no it’s not.
But I’m grateful for my lot.
Blessings come in many ways
Even on the hardest days.
We made it through another day,
Another crazy, busy Sunday.
This won’t always be my life
But for now, I’m the Bishop’s wife.

The Stars at Night

July 17, 2021      Amy Cady

I’ve always been fascinated by the stars. They are so beautiful and calming. Living in the Pacific Northwest as I do now, we don’t see them all that often. But when we do, it is always a fun surprise I do my best to appreciate!

I like to get up in the night
And look out at the stars so bright.
Each tiny twinkle in the sky
Winks back at me from way up high
Each one in place with such great care
Only heaven could’ve put them there
And how many people have they seen –
From peasant to a lovely queen
Those troubled just outside the bay –
And helped them all along their way
What a blessing is each one
That helps us when there is no sun
And the moon is hiding its bright face
In some other secret place.
How glad I am for perfect love
From One who made those stars above
What peace and comfort find me there
When stillness shadows everywhere
And a quiet whisper in my ear
Reminds me that there’s love right here.
How glad i am for oh, so bright –
The stars that twinkle in the night.
